Kolaches (pronounced koh-LAH-chees) are sweet, pillowy-soft pastries made by shaping yeast dough around an array of delicious fruit fillings before baking. They were brought to the U.S. by immigrants from Central Europe during the 1800s. Come see baking enthusiast Lois Carpenter demonstrate how Spillville, Iowa, Czech bakers make kolaches, distinguished by their unique bow tie shape. Special guest Diane Ward, a Spillville native, will share highlights about the community’s Czech traditions and how kolaches make up a big part of their celebrations.
