Join CultureALL Ambassador Sonal Mistry to explore the ancient art of mehendi. The art form of applying henna (known as mehndi) has been a part of many cultures for thousands of years. Thispractice has spanned several cultures and traditions and varies from region to region. Like all symbols, the varying designs often mean different things to different cultures. Henna art is associated with Indian culture and its use as a ceremonial art form for wedding ceremonies. Indian designs are made of a delicate blending of fine lines creating a striking pattern which covers a larger area of the skin such as the hands and feet. Participants in this event will learn the history and significance of mehndi and create their own intricate designs and patterns on note cards and/or hands.
Adults leave the kiddies at home for this one; this event is just for you. Registration is required for this free event. Registration will open Saturday, June 22 at 9:00am.
Sonal Mistry was born in Gujarat, India. She has been living in the US since 1995. She is a professional henna – or mehndi – designer and is also very well versed in Indian culture, arts, crafts, and dances. Ms. Mistry has earned her Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Chemistry from Gujarat University, India. Ms. Mistry is a natural-born/traditional artist and she further improved her art and mehndi skills during her school and college studies. She learned dandiya (stick dance) at a very young age through her involvement in cultural and folk dance activities and perfected her Dandiya/Garba dance by participating in various folk dance competitions. Over the last 20 years, she has shared her knowledge of Indian culture through a variety of interactive presentations at schools, businesses, parties, cultural affairs, and other community events.
