JPL invites you to take part in a series of programs geared toward lifelong learning and skill building for adults. In this series, community professionals, expert DIY-ers, and enthusiastic hobbyists will provide opportunities to try new experiences, learn valuable techniques, and engage with fellow community members. The Skill Share Lending Library Series is for anyone and everyone - from those looking to save some green on that home project to the jack-of-all-trades hobbyist. All you need is a dash of passion for learning something new!
Chickens can be major contributors to the health and beauty of your garden. They process your scraps, and in doing so, they help you produce super rich compost. And who can forget those delicious and convenient fresh eggs! In this Skill Share Session, learn about the benefits of, as well as what it takes to get started keeping your own backyard chickens with Kathy and Ed from Birds and Bees Urban Farm in Des Moines.
Meet the Farmers!
Kathy: A country mouse at heart, Kathy always gardened but wasn’t an actual farmer till she moved to the city of Des Moines. She soon discovered that dirt in urban settings is very different from the soil she was used to. Ed helped her learn to build soil with compost and manure from local sources - one being their very own chickens. Now Kathy is using her experience as a teacher, writer, foodie, and climate activist to help others learn to turn their yards into dinner.
Ed: Ed’s early-age time in Ireland nurtured his love of farming. When he moved from Massachusetts to Iowa, he found a home for his farmer’s heart. Ed’s deep respect for the Earth - what she provides us and all its inhabitants - is also evident in his climate activism. He currently directs two climate-focused nonprofits - Bold Iowa and Climate March.
